Digital Reflection.5

In class this week, we reviewed the guidelines for a "classic novel." Our list included 1.) Timeless, 2.) Creates discussion, 3.) Quality (literary traditions), and 4.) Impact on large audience. One of our criteria for being "timeless," was that the classic book had to be "widely acknowledged" and that it had to have some type of literary recognition. I found this short interview between Oprah and Paolo Coelho, the author of my "classic," The Alchemist. One of the main concepts from The Alchemist (and discussion points of the interview) is that when you want something, the whole world conspires to help you achieve it. I found it interesting because Oprah mentions that she thinks that the universe conspired in helping her perform the interview. It reminded me of our discussion about who has the power or the authority to determine that a piece of literature is worthy of its "classic" label.
